Read Aloud Virginia held Laps for Literacy on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at the Short Pump Town Center. The weather did not stop the many people who participated in the walk dressed in costume as their favorite story book characters.
The event kicked off with registration at 9:00am and Master Cho's Tae Kwon Do and Martial Arts Center warming the walkers and volunteers up with some jumping jacks and stretches prior to the 9:30am start time. Each walker received a treasure map with questions that they needed to find the answers to as they walked throughout Short Pump Town Center.
After all walkers returned to the finish line the family festival began with local kids band Silly Bus entertaining the crowd. Raffle prizes were announced as the festival came to an end.
All proceeds from the days event will help RAV programs continue to motivate at-risk children to love and want to read, strenghten families by encouraging the family reading time and home libraries; and prepare children with language and literacy skills necessary to become successful adults.
