A night to help cure the blues

It was no night to have the blues, in fact it was a night to cure the blues! And that is just what 200 people did at the Barksdale Theatre on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at 7:00pm as they gathered to help raise money and awareness for the Department of Psychiatry at VCUHS.
The Barksdale Theatre's intimate setting made for a great venue to hear The John Nemeth Blues Band, who performed for well over an hour and a half. Prior to the Band taking the stage, emcee for the evening, Ric Arenstein welcomed those in attendance and thanked his wife Rhona's passion, vision and committment to not just the evening, but to the greater picture, her support of mental health. Department Chair, Joel Silverman, M.D. followed remarking on what a critical time in healthcare it is. Dr. Silverman discussed the four major areas the Department of Psychiatry is working on (1) genetic research (2) development of new programs in women's mental health (3) child resource center (4) medical education to all medical students not just those practicing in the psychiatric field.
A first for The Department of Psychiatry, the night concluded with the Band taking the stage for the second half 45 minute set. The Department of Psychiatry at VCUHS has been serving the community for over 100 years. Their vision is to conquer mental illness.
