It was a beautiful day in Richmond as thousands turned out for the 20th Annual Big Brothers Big Sisters Duck Race on Brown's Island, benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Richmond and the Tri-Cities. The event, the largest fundraiser for the organization, raised over $150,000 that all goes to their mission of providing a child with an adult Big Brother or Big Sister. With temperatures reaching high into the 90's, the crowd kept cool by enjoying free snow cones, compliments of Captain D's Seafood, visiting the "cool zone" tent or by just hanging in the shade watching wonderful entertainment by such groups as The Shaolin Dragon School of Kung-Fu. The many family activities available provided a fun filled day. The children (and adults) were able to try their luck at winning some prizes by bowling with AMF Lanes, spinning the wheel of fortune with Dave and Busters or just stopping by the SPCA area and viewing the new puppies available for adoption. The Duck Race got underway at 3:00p.m. with the ducks being droped into the Haxall Canal. The grand prize, a 2009 Volkswagen Rabbit (courtesy of West Broad Volkswagen) was won by Sherry Burnett of Richmond. The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters is to make a positive difference in the lives of children, primarily through a professionally-supported one-to-one mentoring relationship with a caring adult. Big Brothers Big Sisters is committed to assisting children to achieve their highest potential by becoming confident, competent, and caring individuals.
