Safe Harbor held their Beacon of Hope event on Saturday, May 9, 2009 at The Women's Club, Bolling Haxell House at 6:00 p.m. The Beacon of Hope Award was started by Safe Harbor to recognize an outstanding individual or agency that has been instrumental in breaking the silence of domestic abuse within the Richmond community. The evening's honoree and recipient of the Beacon of Hope award was presented to Sheryl Robins Nolt. The evenings program began with cocktails and a silent auction, where guests had the chance to bid on items ranging from Caribbean vacations, Dave Matthew concert tickets, jewelry, paintings and lunches and dinners at some of Richmond's fabulous restaurants. After bids had placed, the award ceremony followed. Guests listened closely to a heartwarming speech from a Safe Harbor client, who spoke about her personal experiences with domestic violence and how the services that are provided by Safe Harbor are valuable and needed. The Beacon of Hope Award was then presented to Sheryl Robins Nolt by a representative of Bon Secours (who was the 2008 Beacon of Hope recipient). Sheryl Robins Nolt has been involved with Safe Harbor for 9 years. During those 9 years, Mrs. Nolt has served as the Chair of the Development Committee and President of the Board of Directors. Under her years of involvement with Safe Harbor the organization has grown to be one of the foremost domestic violence agencies in Central Virginia. The awards ceremony was followed by games of blackjack, roulett, horseracing and dancing. Safe Harbor is a resource center for persons who have or are now presently experiencing domestic violence. We respect clients’ rights to make their own decisions for what is best for themselves and their families. Our staff is here to provide education, support and referrals to other programs to help our clients to empower themselves to make choices for healthy relationships and healthy lifestyles. All of Safe Harbor’s services are provided free of charge
