The weather cleared just in time for The Peter Paul Development Center to hold their Garden Party Brunch and Silent Auction on Sunday, May 3, 2009 at the Peter Paul Development Center. Those in attendance were delighted that the weather cooperated allowing to then to see first hand the beautiful garden that The Peter Paul Development Center in conjunction with Tricyle Gardens had established. Nellie Appleby of Tricycle Gardens discussed how the children at The Peter Paul Center grew as their garden grew. Explaining how at first some of the children were hesitant to dig, more worried about the worms they may encounter. However, the joy of seeing the broccoli, radishes, spinach, peas, lettuce and strawberries sprout had given them an appreciation and love of the garden. Inside guests enjoyed an array of food and while browsing and bidding on the silent auction items. This was the first event of its kind for The Peter Paul Development Center, whose mission is to build a community of learners by engaging and challenging children, families and seniors in Richmond's East End through programs that enhance academic achievement, provide cultural enrichment and promote self-esteem and lifelong self-sufficiency. Tricycle Gardens works closely with neighborhood organizations, local foundations, educational institutions, and city government to support the construction of other community gardens.
