Have You Met?
Name: Kelly Tattersall
Hometown: Lynchburg, VA
Resident: Richmond, VA
Education: Virginia Commonwealth University
Profession: "Semi-Retired" Realtor
Status: Married
Family: Husband and twin daughters
Story by: Rachel Teyssier
While growing up, Kelly had the opportunity to observe her parents' involvement with the non-profits in Lynchburg. Her parents instilled in Kelly and her siblings the importance of volunteering. As a result, Kelly learned first hand what it meant to give back to the community. Out on her own, Kelly first became involved with The Boys and Girls Club of Metro Richmond. Kelly would spend one afternoon a week and volunteer during "power hour". "Power Hour was the time of the day when the children would do their homework and study for their exams. Many of these children did not have the support at home, to help them. It was great to see their faces light up when you walked in the room" Kelly says. Going through a difficult time of her own, Kelly discusses how good it made her feel to put her own concerns aside and just think of the kids. Kelly and her husband Kirk, make it a priority in their lives to give to others in need and hope that they will instill this same quality in their children.
Favorite Restaurant?: The Farmhouse and The North Pole both in Manakin-Sabot
Who is your hero and why?: My hero would have to be my husband. He is, without a doubt, the most kind, thoughtful, generous, loving, fair and humble person I know. He makes me want to be a better person, daily! I am so lucky to have him beside me in this life.
What one-word/words describe you best?: Energetic, multitasker, a tad disorganized, loving and loyal.... and sometimes, maybe a bit too sensitive.
What was your first job?: My first real job, was a travel agent... and it was not the $10,000 a year salary that attracted me to it. It was the $50 trips to the Bahamas or cruises with 3 hour notice that enticed me. I had to wait on tables at night to actually pay my bills.
What are your volunteer activities?: Currently, I volunteer with ChildSavers and The Blue Sky Fund. ChildSavers of Richmond is a local non-profit, whose mission is to provide comprehensive mental health and childhood development services that holistically embrace the needs of children and those who care for and educate them. The Blue Sky Fund is a grass roots nonprofit that I became involved with on a volunteer level. Their mission is to provide transformational experiences for urban youth through outdoor education.
What is your greatest indulgence?: My greatest indulgence would be spending time with my family, going on dates with my husband and okay, shoes!
What do you consider your greatest achievement?: My two daughters....corney but true!
Favorite books / Writers?: Recently, I was inspired by the book "Leaving Microsoft to Change the World" by John Wood. It is about a man who wanted to initiate education and reading in Nepal, or any other third world country. It meant enough to him, that he left everything and committed himself to this cause. My family and I are attached to an Island off the coast of Honduras, called Roatan. The illiteracy rate there is appalling and even worse, the lack of concern or help from the Honduran Government. It is accepted, as a way of life. Reading that book made us want to do something about it. I love a book that inspires you to do something!
